In a festive day filled with centuries-old religious traditions and pageantry, as well as joyful singing, the Rev. Valerie Bailey Fischer was installed this month as the seventh rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Teaneck following a nationwide search.

The church was overflowing with parishioners, friends, clergy from other churches and family - including the new rector's husband and 3-year-old daughter, Maggie - as the Right Rev. Mark Beckwith, Bishop of Newark, formally installed Bailey Fischer as the congregation's spiritual leader.

Three Kings Day a post-Christmas treat at Christ Church, Newton

By:
Amy Herzog / New Hersey Herald

It was a post-Christmas celebration with a Latin flair Saturday night as Sussex County's Spanish-speaking community came together at Christ Episcopal Church in Newton to celebrate "Día de los Tres Reyes," or Three Kings Day. The event, in its seventh year at the church, is organized through immigrant outreach program El Refugio as a means of promoting Latino cultural traditions, Father Robert Griner said.

Rev. Andrew Butler at St. John's Episcopal Church is adamant. "Church should not be an exclusive club," he says.

And that's why St. John's is unveiling a new kind of worship service on Sunday, Jan. 8 designed to appeal to families with children—especially those with some kind of developmental challenge.

Catering to short attention spans, the "All God's Children" service will be a lively combination of music, prayer, movement, and communion.

Flinging the doors open wide, South Orange rector welcomes everyone into her lively and diverse community

By:
Amy Ellis Nutt / The Star-Ledger

The small plaque hanging on the wall of the 58-year-old’s office pretty much sums her up:

"It’s a rare person who can take care of hearts while also taking care of business."

For the Rev. Canon Dr. Sandye A. Wilson, rector of the Episcopal Church of St. Andrew & Holy Communion in South Orange, taking care of hearts is her business.

The Presiding Bishop's Sermon at Incarnation, Jersey City

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori.

I rode the subway early yesterday morning, and at one stop a group of young people got on with several bulky suitcases, including a hard cased one that looked like it could hold a big keyboard. One pushed an empty wheelchair, another brought a walker, and one rolled a furniture dolly. One young man immediately sat down and leaned over onto the seat to sleep. They didn’t appear to be in need of those mobility aids themselves, but in the few minutes we shared the same car I wondered where they were going and why they had all that stuff. Were these Occupy-ers moving their camp to a new place?

Spirit of generosity and outreach is the heart of Christ Church, Pompton Lakes

By:
Rebecca Greene / northjersey.com

The welcoming, busy and generous congregation of Christ Episcopal Church, 400 Ramapo Ave., steeped in history and family tradition, is celebrating its first year with Priest-in-Charge, Reverend Stephen Rozzelle.

"The signature of this church is their outreach," said Rev. Rozzelle. "They respond to others during crisis."

After the devastating floods brought on by Hurricane Irene at the end of August, the parish raised $8,000 and replaced washer and dryers for residents on one street in the town.

On Sunday, Incarnation welcomed the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church to celebrate the Eucharist, culminating a year-long centennial celebration.

A little over a year ago, Paul Shackford was looking to bring a "different" type of program to St. Andrew's Church and took a drive to Budd Lake to attend a church service for families of special needs children.

"It was just such an exciting service," said Shackford, a Harrington Park resident for 30 years and a member of St. Andrew's Church for 28-29 years. "I was really taken with it."

Shackford's fellow parishioners were just as excited about the service, titled, "All God's Children Worship Service" and were eager to start the program at St. Andrew's Church.
