with consecration of 11th Bishop

[September 10, 2018] The Rev. Carlye J. Hughes will be consecrated the 11th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark on Saturday, September 22, at 11 AM, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. She was elected on May 19, 2018 on the first ballot and will be the first woman and first African-American to serve the Diocese of Newark as diocesan bishop.

The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, will officiate as Chief Consecrator. On the same day Hughes was elected bishop, Presiding Bishop Curry made headlines around the world for his sermon at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Upon Bishop-elect Hughes' consecration, the Rt. Rev. Mark M. Beckwith will retire, concluding nearly 12 years of service as the 10th Bishop of Newark. During his tenure he has been a leader on issues of social justice; co-founded and co-chaired Bishops United Against Gun Violence; and co-hosted NJTV’s A Matter of Faith with a Bishop, an Imam and a Rabbi.

Location: Episcopal House, 31 Mulberry Street in Newark (directions and parking)
Presiding Bishop Curry, Bishop-elect Hughes and Bishop Beckwith will all participate. There will be online access for media not able to attend.

Saturday, September 22
Consecration service: 11 AM at NJPAC in Newark
Doors open: 9:45 AM. Attendees seated by 10:30 AM.

Sunday, September 23
Public worship service: 10 AM in Jersey City
Location: Ferris Triangle Park, across from Triangle Park Community Center, 247 Old Bergen Road in Jersey City
The new Bishop will preside and preach at an outdoor service for the combined congregations of the Jersey City Episcopal churches. The public is welcome to attend.
Formal Seating of the 11th Bishop: 3 PM in Newark
Location: Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral, 608 Broad Street in Newark
The new Bishop will be formally welcomed and seated in the Cathedral of the Diocese of Newark and will preside and preach at a service of Evening Prayer. The public is welcome to attend.
Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral began in 1746 as Trinity Church, when it received its charter from King George II. The original building was destroyed during the Revolutionary War; the current building, completed in 1810, is the nation’s oldest Episcopal cathedral building.
