Interfaith prayer vigil in Secaucus promotes peace, compassion among different faiths, cultures

[The Jersey Journal] The Interfaith Religious Leaders of Secaucus held a communal Prayer Vigil this week to promote peace and compassion among different faiths and cultures.

"We're coming together to reject the spirit of hate that seems to be all around us," the Rev. Elizabeth Searle of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, said. "Whatever our faith, we are here tonight to stand up for compassion, mercy, kindness and justice."

[Passaic Valley Today] Officers with the Little Falls Police Department have kicked off a program so they can talk to residents in person more frequently.

The department hosted its first event for the program, called Coffee with a Cop, on Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, in The Falls Kitchen restaurant. A program that exists nationwide, its goal is to strengthen the relationship between police and residents in the community.

[MorristownGreen.com] In the wake of this month’s massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, “it is especially important that we stand up and declare our pride in them, and in ourselves,” Bishop Gene Robinson told a gay pride service at Morristown’s Episcopal Church of the Redeemer on Sunday.

Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, compared the Pulse nightclub to a cathedral, and the murders to a desecration.

[The Star-Ledger] More than 34,500 people were shot to death in this country last year, some 21,000 of them by their own hand. An additional 27,000 are living with the wounds they sustained. The casualties roughly equal the populations of Bayonne, East Orange or Vineland. But sometimes to comprehend the degree to which gun violence has degraded our culture, it helps to focus on just one life.
