Lenten Meditation - Tuesday February 27

Lenten Meditations

Psalm 62:8-9

In God is my safety and my honor; *God is my strong rock and my refuge.

Put your trust in him always, O people, *pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.

Another High School shooting.  Seventeen more dead.  And the clamor for simple fixes has begun yet again.

If we just ban assault rifles this will stop.  No, it won’t.  There is no easy answer, however much our leaders would like us to believe.  Ban.  No ban.  And this hollow rhetoric will go on until the next tragedy and, if history teaches us anything, nothing will happen.

As Christians, however, we are being called to step forward and keep this issue in front of us.  To admit that it is not simply about guns, but of all the demons that can lead someone to walk into a school at the end of the day, and change so many lives forever.  Bullying, mental illness, the violence we see every day on TV, in video games, and all around us—all are part of what needs to be addressed.

In this Lenten season, may we acknowledge our need for God to come to our help.  And may we have the strength to listen to what God is telling us.  And to act.
