The Diocese of Newark is hosting a Speaker Series on Race co-hosted by Bishop Hughes and the Namaste Anti-Racism Commission. Three leaders from within The Episcopal Church will reflect on the question “How are we talking about race in The Episcopal Church?” Each speaker will provide a unique understanding and an opportunity for reflections on race.
Registration is not required, and there is no fee to attend. Zoom log-in information will be shared in diocesan communication the week before each date.

The Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers
The Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers serves as the Presiding Bishop’s Canon for Evangelism, Reconciliation and Creation, helping Episcopalians to follow Jesus’ Way of Love and to grow loving, life-giving and liberating relationships with God, each other, and the earth. The author of Radical Welcome: Embracing God, The Other and the Spirit of Transformation – as well as The Episcopal Way and Companions on the Episcopal Way (with Eric Law) – she has directed mission and evangelism work at General Theological Seminary and as a canon in the Diocese of Long Island; founded The Crossing, a ground-breaking church within St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston and led numerous church-wide renewal efforts. A native of Frankfort, Kentucky, and a graduate of both Episcopal Divinity School and Harvard Divinity School, she makes her home today in New York’s Harlem neighborhood.
The Rev. Charles Wynder, Jr.
The Reverend Charles Wynder, Jr. is the Chaplain and Teacher of Humanities at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. He previously served on the Presiding Bishop’s Staff as the Staff Officer for Social Justice and Engagement. During that time, he also served as Priest-in-Charge of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church located in Washington, D.C. He served as an attorney in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps; a Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney; an Executive Director of a federally funded legal services program; and Vice-President of Programs for the National Legal Aid & Defender Association before going to the Episcopal Divinity School. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and the University of Michigan Law School.
Dr. Catherine Meeks
Catherine Meeks, Ph.D. is the Founding Executive Director of the Absalom Jones Episcopal Center for Racial Healing as well as the retired Clara Carter Acree Distinguished Professor of Socio-cultural Studies and Sociology from Wesleyan College. Catherine is an author who has published seven books including her recently co-authored book, Passionate for Justice, Ida B. Wells- A Prophet for Our Times which was released in September 2019 and her edited book Living Into God's Dream: Dismantling Racism in America which focuses on racial healing and reconciliation published in 2016. She is a regular contributor to Hospitality which is published monthly by the Open Door Community. She is involved with prison work and faithfully visits a person who was formally on death row. She is committed to working for the abolition of the death penalty, writing and helping to create spaces where transformation and rebirth can occur.
