Video: New Rector at Redeemer, celebrating creativity and diversity in Morristown

In a liturgy celebrating its inclusive theology and worship style, its commitment to justice and its connections to the Morristown community and the wider Episcopal Church, the Church of the Redeemer on South Street officially installed its 16th rector on Thursday, Sept. 29, the Rev. Cynthia Black.

Christ Church in Teaneck participates in food drive

Christ Church in Teaneck has been newly designated as a collection site in the North Jersey Media Group’s Annual Food Drive on Sunday, Oct. 2. The Church’s Faith, Hope, and Love Food Pantry began operations in 2000 and, thanks to a grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, has been able to expand its capacity to provide food to more families in northern Bergen County and beyond and increase the number of Saturdays in the month it is open.

Calvary Church in Summit Welcomes New Rector

After a comprehensive selection process, the Reverend Matthew T. L. Corkern has been selected as the new Rector for Calvary Church in Summit. Reverend Corkern most recently served as the Rector of Trinity Episcopal church in Mobile, Alabama where he led the renovation and revitalization of the church along with educational and spiritual opportunities for children, youth and adults.

Corkern is a nationally known and progressive leader who embraces music and the arts in his ministry.

Installation of Redeemer, Morristown Rector set for Sept. 29

The Right Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, will lead a Celebration of New Ministry service formally installing the Rev. Cynthia L. Black, D.D., as the 16th Rector of the Church of the Redeemer, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29. The public is invited to attend.

The Rev. Black was selected from a pool of more than 125 applicants. She was chosen for her strong preaching, her exceptional liturgical skills, and her commitment to social justice and community outreach.

Star-Ledger Video of the "Compassion in Action" 9/11 Interfaith Service

On Sunday, September 11, members of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths gathered at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral in Newark to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The interfaith service, attended by Newark Mayor Cory Booker, blended religious readings, chants and music from the three faiths under the guidance of Bishop Mark Beckwith, Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz of Temple B'Nai Jeshurun in Short Hills, and Imam Wahy-ud Deen Shareef of the Masjid Waarith ud Deen in Irvington.

United Airlines flight attendant Georgeina Day DuFresne of Morris Plains was in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. She had just thanked God for a beautiful day and was anticipating flying home to be with her daughter, Sara. “Then I watched the plane hit the tower.”

On Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, DuFresney donned her flight uniform and sat in the front row at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown to remember the colleagues she had lost.

St. John's in Boonton Responds as Killing Shocks and Puzzles a Quiet New Jersey Town

At St. John's Episcopal Church in Boonton on Thursday night, less than a block from where Nazish Noorani was killed, relatives, neighbors and friends began streaming into the small building at about 7 p.m.

An imam was in attendance, and the church’s pastor, Laurie Wurm, led a brief prayer service. A sign in front of the church read, "We Mourn for Nazish. We Pray for Her Family."

St. John's Church in Boonton Holds Candlelight Vigil For Muslim Shooting Victim

On Wednesday, August 17, relatives, friends, and neighbors of Nazish Noorani gathered for a candlelight vigil led by the Rev. Laurie Wurm of St. John's Church in Boonton. Noorani was shot and killed the night before while walking with her husband and 3-year-old son to her father's house, after breaking the Ramadan fast at her sister's house nearby. The candlelight vigil was included in an online photo gallery by Star-Ledger photographer Saed Hindash.
