Diocese to send 11 young observers to General Convention

Our diocese will send 11 young people – nine youth and two young adults – to General Convention, accompanied by two chaperones. Each participant is involved in his or her home congregation, and about half are active in diocesan youth ministry as well. While at General Convention they will attend legislative hearings in the House of Bishops and House of Deputies, participate in committee hearings and worship, meet other church leaders and observe our church’s polity.

Bishops United Against Gun Violence plans prayerful procession at General Convention

Claiming Common Ground Against Gun Violence

Bishops United Against Gun Violence, a group of more than 60 Episcopal bishops of which Bishop Mark Beckwith is co-convener, will sponsor a prayerful procession through the streets of Salt Lake City during General Convention. The gathering is intended to urge people of faith to seek common ground in efforts to curtail gun violence.

The event, called Claiming Common Ground Against Gun Violence, will begin at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, outside the Salt Palace Convention Center.

78th General Convention of The Episcopal Church

Tuesday, June 23, 2015 to Friday, July 3, 2015

Bishop Mark Beckwith and a deputation of lay people and clergy will travel to Salt Lake City to represent the Diocese of Newark at the 78th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. Accompanying them for part of Convention will be a group of 11 youth and young adult observers, chaperoned by Kaileen Alston, diocesan Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries and the Rev. Robert Browning, Rector of Grace Church, Rutherford; and Nina Nicholson, diocesan Director of Communications & Technology, who will support the communications efforts of the Newark contingent.
