St. Agnes' Church in Little Falls starts food pantry

By:
Matthew Kadosh / Passaic Valley Today

A room within St. Agnes Episcopal Church is stocked with canned soups, meats, fruits, and vegetables alongside cereals, pasta and pet food. It is the church's newly expanded food pantry and is open to anyone in need.

The church has always collected and distributed food for the needy, but several weeks ago they took it a step further and officially opened a food bank.

Star-Ledger "Quotes of the Week" quote by Diane Riley

The Rev. Diane Riley, a deacon in the Diocese of Newark as well as director for advocacy of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, is quoted in this article in The Star-Ledger.

The rich really did get richer in New Jersey over the past 10 years, and the gulf between the wealthiest and poorest residents is the widest it’s been since the Great Depression, a new study has found.

The Justice Board Needs Your Help

Pages:

By:
The Rev. Deacon Diane Riley

As part of their responsibility to fulfill the recently passed Resolution to help congregations in their mission to Focus on the Needs of Children, the Justice Board has designed a simple questionnaire to collect information on current and desired mission ventures.

Recently we asked for parish leadership to take a few moments to fill out this on-line survey in the Leadership News and had no responses. We are extending the deadline until May 25. We hope that you can attend to this task as it will greatly help the Justice Board’s work of developing resources to help our common mission and ministry. We invite as many of you and/or your congregational leaders to engage in this exercise as would be appropriate. There is no limit.

Deacons: A Full and Equal Order

Deacons Day 2018 with Bishop Carlye Hughes

I am convinced that there are at least two deacons in every congregation who do not yet know they are being called by God. It is the delightful and diligent task of all the people to look for them and call them by name. – Roderick B. Dugliss, dean, The Episcopal School for Deacons, Berkley, CA

Diane Riley spends her days advocating for hungry people, recognizing that she could be in their place were she born 25 years later.

"I grew up in a very blue-collar home, and I know that today we would be one of the people going to food pantries," said Riley, advocacy director for the Community FoodBank in Hillside, New Jersey, and a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. "We were able to make ends meet, own a small home. We never went hungry. We had health care. That would not be the case today."
