School for Ministry: Preacher Training

Bible
Sat, Aug 24 2024, 9:00am

Registration is closed. (Capacity met)

Preacher Training will be held on the following dates (online, except where "in person" is noted): August 24, September 21, October 19, November 16, January 18, February 15 (in person).

Preacher training is designed for lay ministers who are invited by their clergy person to preach in public worship on an occasional or regular basis. In congregations without clergy, that supervision comes from the Wardens and Vestry. Another priest or deacon may be appointed in those cases to provide additional oversight and feedback. Training as a preacher begins with studying Scripture from the perspective of how to engage with the readings for sermon preparation and learning basic skills in exegesis and interpretation. Additionally, it includes training in how to compose and deliver a sermon effectively.

Preacher training is also a component of Pastoral Leader training, so will include students from both programs.

In addition to this training, licensing as a Preaching requires submitting an application and verifying that they are Confirmed Communicants in Good Standing (Confirmed members who attend worship and give regularly) of a congregation in the Diocese of Newark. Preachers must complete the Safe Church, Safe Communities training, which can be completed online.
