It is with all good wishes and a touch of sadness that we share the news of the departure of Canon Gregory Jacobs from our diocesan staff.
After serving the diocese for 11 years as Canon to the Ordinary and Chief of Staff, Greg has announced his intention to retire effective July 1.
Greg was called by Bishop Mark Beckwith as the Canon for Mission and Ministry on September 2, 2008. Following Canon Carter Echols’ departure a few months later to accept a position with Bread for the World, Greg agreed to take on the additional responsibilities of her position. Bishop Beckwith then named him Canon to the Ordinary and Chief of Staff with principal responsibility for congregational and clergy development, transition ministry, and diocesan personnel development.
Greg mused that it was often difficult to explain to people exactly what a Canon to the Ordinary does. “Actually, the position has its roots in the early days of the Anglican Church, but it’s too complicated to try to explain it. So I just call myself the Bishop’s point person for anything relating to congregations and clergy.”
Among Greg’s fondest memories are relationships formed with Bishop Mark Beckwith, clergy, and congregations, and most especially with diocesan staff, past and present, and most recently, Bishop Carlye Hughes. He is especially grateful for the love and support that he received after the untimely deaths of first wife, Beverly, in 2012 and second wife, Sheila, in 2017.
“We can all be grateful for Greg’s faithful service to God’s people in our diocese,” said Bishop Hughes. “I am especially grateful for his generosity of spirit and wisdom during the transition of bishops. He has been a gift to the diocese and to me personally as I settle into my role. He has my prayers for many blessings on the next chapter of his life.”
Greg’s immediate plans are to relocate to Durham, NC, devote more time to family, fun and travel, and discover what God what might be up to.
A farewell reception is planned for Thursday, June 20 from 5:30 PM until 8 PM at Episcopal House. A festive Celebration of Ministry Evensong will be held at St. Paul’s Church, Englewood on Sunday, June 23 at 3 PM with a reception following.
