[The Jersey Journal] More than a dozen congregations, representing Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists, Protestants and Roman Catholics [will] perform the Stations of the Cross on April 3, Good Friday, by visiting 14 sites of violent incidents in Jersey City over the past 12 months.

At each station, a nail will be driven into an 8-foot cross being carried during the procession and participants will pray for the victim who suffered at that location. Close to 100 people are expected to participate.

The Stations of the Cross, performed on the anniversary of the day Jesus was crucified, signify 14 scenes from the day Jesus died, starting with his condemnation and ending with his body being laid in the tomb.

The event will start at 9:30 a.m. and will include the site where Jersey City police Detective Melvin Santiago was gunned down in July. A group of children will sing at the ninth station, at 16 Salem Lafayette Court, where a 5-year-old child was shot last year.

The event was created by the Rev. Thomas M. Murphy, rector at St. Paul's, and the Rev. Laurie Wurm, rector at Grace Van Vorst, two Episcopal churches in Jersey City. The Church of the Incarnation, another Episcopal church, is also a sponsor of the event.
