Death in our diocesan family: John Timothy McGirr, husband of the Rev. Joyce McGirr

With sadness we share the news of the passing of John Timothy McGirr on Tuesday, January 20 in Norwood. John was the husband of the Rev. Joyce McGirr, who was ordained to the Priesthood on January 10 and is serving as Priest Associate at Church of the Atonement in Tenafly.

Visitation will be held Friday January 23 from 4-7 p.m. at Barrett's Funeral Home, 148 Dean Street, Tenably, NJ. The Celebration of John's life and Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday January 24 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Communion, 66 Summit Street, Norwood, NJ.

John grew up in Tenafly attending Mt. Carmel School and graduating from Tenafly HS. He went on to the University of Maryland graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was Eastern Regional Sales Manager and Manager of National Accounts for Westvaco Corp. in New York City.

In Tenafly, he was active in lay ministry at Mt. Carmel Church, a member of the Juvenile Conference Committee, coach of Little League baseball and Committee Chairman of Pack 178 and Boy Scout Troop 86.

Moving to Norwood, he joined the Church of the Holy Communion, serving in lay ministry and as member of the Vestry and Search Committee.

After retirement, he served as moderator and instructor for MeadWestvaco's Bleached Board and Packaging Seminar in Virginia offering his knowledge and expertise to customers around the world. He volunteered at Englewood Hospital and for Meals on Wheels.

John is predeceased by his son Michael. In addition to his wife the Rev. Joyce McGirr, he is survived by their children David, Kate, Darren Lolk and Darren's wife Delica Reduque-Lolk.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to Church of the Holy Communion in Norwood.

When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death
we gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven.
