Fifth BCEF Call of 2012: Christ Church, Harrison Replacement Chimney

A place where people gather in the name of Christ:
to worship Him, to proclaim His resurrection, and to serve Him.

Christ Church has been part of the Harrison community since its founding in 1883 as a ministry of Trinity Church in Newark. And since its beginnings, the parishioners have cared for the people in the community and been attentive to the buildings and grounds that were entrusted to them.

The community has been served with commitment, nurture and hospitality for the young and not-so-young for decades. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the church’s partnership with a full day pre-school for children serving families in Harrison and the surrounding communities and The Study Hall, a program for youth that has had a positive influence on young people. Teachers and aides who are part of the after-school program recall fondly their years as youths attending the program at the church.

Not surprising for a building of its age, repairs and renovations have been required over the years and the congregation has been able to address them as best they can. This past year the slate roof was replaced with support from the Ward J. Herbert Fund.

In recent weeks, a problem with a blocked chimney was discovered and remedied before becoming a more serious concern. The chimney was clogged and preventing the release of smoke and gases from the two boilers that heat the church and the parish hall. Remediation was done within twenty-four hours because of the harmful situation created by the blockage. The repair work cost just under $9,000, an amount that is stretching the current resources of the congregation. Partial support will be provided by the Ward J. Herbert Fund. Your assistance will help the church complete the payment for the repairs.
