Clergy Compensation & Church Tax Workshop

The Finance Department will host a Clergy Compensation & Church Tax Workshop on two dates, Tuesday, September 24 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. and Thursday, September 26, 2013, from 9-11:30 a.m.  (The same presentation will be made at each workshop.) They will be conducted by Bill Geisler, a tax expert in compensation and other matters that affect clergy and churches, and Paul Shackford, diocesan CFO. Clergy and treasurers are invited to attend.

The workshop will include discussion regarding the following topics:

  • Maximizing Tax Benefits for Clergy

    • Housing Allowances (determining the proper amount, documentation requirements, etc.)
    • Accountable Reimbursements
    • Discretionary Funds
    • Flexible and Health Care Spending Accounts
    • Section 106 Medical Insurance Reimbursements
  • Complying with Federal Payroll Tax Requirements

    • How to Properly Complete the Form W-2
    • Filing Obligations
  • Employee or Independent Contractor?
  • Reporting Group Term Life Insurance
  • And Other Topics

In addition, there will be a discussion about church-related questions, such as:

  • Implications of Renting Church Space or Rectories
  • Renting Your Parking Lot
  • And Other Topics

The session will begin with light refreshments, followed by discussion of the above topics as well as others.  There will be time for questions and answers.
