Mildred was ordained in the Diocese of Massachusetts in 1986. Between 1998 and 2003 she served as the rector of two churches in the Diocese of Newark, St. Barnabas, Newark and House of Prayer, Newark, before returning to Massachusetts.

She was an active member in the Union of Black Episcopalians and the NAACP, and was elected with 40 others to represent the Diocese of Massachusetts on a peace mission to Russia in 1987.

She is survived by three sisters, Francine G. Pina, Marcelina E. Pina-Christian and her husband Armsted, and Renee Pina-Grace and her husband Keith; two brothers, Antone J. Pina and Julian M. Pina and his wife Danielle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Letters of condolence may be sent to her family in care of her sister Marcelina E. Pina-Christian at achristian@berklee.edu.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St., New Bedford, MA 02740. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Church in New Bedford.

Good and gracious God, the light of the faithful and shepherd of souls, you sent your servant Mildred to be a priest in your Church to feed your sheep with your word and to guide them by her example; give us the grace to keep the faith she taught and to follow in her footsteps. We entrust her into your unfailing mystery of Love and Hope through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
