St. Peter’s Hosts a Screening of Documentary The Philadelphia Eleven on Saturday, May 18th @ 3PM.

Morristown, NJ - May 3, 2024 - St. Peter’s Episcopal Church announces a special event commemorating the 50th anniversary of a groundbreaking moment in the history of the Episcopal Church. On Saturday, May 18th at 3 PM, St. Peter’s will host a screening of the documentary The Philadelphia Eleven, chronicling the ordination of eleven women to the Episcopal priesthood in defiance of existing church regulations.

The documentary sheds light on the pivotal events that unfolded in 1974 at a church in Philadelphia when eleven courageous women challenged the status quo by seeking ordination to the priesthood, despite the Episcopal Church's official stance that only men were eligible for such roles. The screening will take place at St. Peter’s Church located at 70 Maple Avenue in Morristown, NJ.

The Philadelphia Eleven tells the compelling story of these trailblazing women who risked personal safety and faced rejection from the church they loved in their pursuit of equality within the priesthood. Their unwavering determination and resilience in the face of adversity continue to inspire generations of women in ministry.

Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring the Rev. Nancy H. Wittig, one of the Philadelphia Eleven whose journey is featured prominently in the documentary. Rev. Wittig will share her insights and reflections on the challenges and triumphs of breaking down barriers within the church. Joining Rev. Wittig on the panel will be The Rev. Diana L. Wilcox Rector of Christ Church in Bloomfield and Glen Ridge as well as The Rev. Danielle D. Baker, Priest-in-charge at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Morris Plains.

The event is open to the public, and admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to register online at stpetersmorristown.org to reserve a seat.
