Of the three signs that God is active and present in our hearts—faith, hope, and love—hope has a particular urgency in a time when threats to our wellbeing and the future of society and the world are on the rise. How do we understand genuine hope as distinct from mere optimism? How do we open ourselves to taking part in God’s hope-filled desire for a better life for ourselves, our communities, and the planet? How do we open ourselves to the hope of eternal life?
