In 2017, he became Vice President of Religion and Senior Pastor at Chautauqua Institution, having served for nearly five years as a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, Washington, DC.

He authored In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God in 2008, and in 2012 God Believes in Love: Straight Talk About Gay Marriage, contributing to the national debate about marriage equality. He is the subject of two feature-length documentaries: For the Bible Tells Me So (2006), and Love Free or Die (2012), which won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance.

Bishop Robinson was invited by Barack Obama to give the invocation at the opening inaugural ceremonies at the Lincoln Memorial on January 18, 2009.
