Short Hills choir spends week as choir-in-residence at English cathedral

The Parish Choir of Christ Church in Short Hills recently returned from a week-long trip to the United Kingdom, where they were choir-in-residence at Bristol Cathedral in the Cumbria section of England.

In addition to singing at Bristol Cathedral for six days, the Christ Church choir also sang Evensong at Salisbury Cathedral. Dr. Andrew Moore, who is also the Music Department Chair at the Pingry School, leads the choir.

The Rev. Dr. Timothy Mulder, Rector of Christ Church, also participated in the trip and Evensong services. “For most of us, this was literally a trip of a lifetime,” he said. “Not only did we make new friends in Bristol, but it connected us with the history of our faith tradition in a living way. Our volunteer choir was augmented with professional vocalists and it was a learning and fun experience to sing with people of that caliber.”

Mulder added, “We learned that the English pray by singing, whether it is their hymns or their prayers. Singing in England is something everyone of all ages does, and they love doing it together.”

During the year, the Parish Choir sings every Sunday at the 10 AM Eucharist service, as well as for a number of concerts during the year.
