Deputies and guests at Convention had an opportunity to play a little, while at the same time making a visual sign of their commitment to the serious topic of children's justice issues.

"The Hands Project," organized by the 10 interns of NEWARK ACTS, invited Convention attendees to use children's finger paints to make a colorful hand print on a 24 foot-long white cloth banner under the words "I pledge to help."

"All of the interns work in areas that support children or families," said the Rev. Erik Soldwedel, Director of NEWART ACTS, "so they wanted to do a project that depicts what kids are while demonstrating a commitment to kids."

The banner was the brain child of intern Jamarr Neyland, who majored in Fine Arts at Kent State University. Jamarr, who has already decided to return for a second year with NEWARK ACTS, gave the NEWARK ACTS Convention report while his fellow interns held up the finished banner.

The banner will be displayed again at the June special Convention at which the diocese will continue its focus on mission.
