Insurance Update -- Hurricane Irene & More

By:
Paul Shackford, CFO

Over 25 congregations suffered some damage from Hurricane Irene... some relatively minor in nature, but others sustained significant damage.  We have met with Church Insurance Company to discuss the process that CIC is using to work with our congregations and to arrive at reasonable settlements of the monetary damage sustained.

As part of this process, we have found that some congregations are not clear about the type and level of their coverage.  We have also seen some instances where the deductibles are perhaps higher than they should be.  And we have found congregations that should have had flood insurance, which would have protected them from significant losses.

If you have sustained damage from Hurricane Irene or the recent October snow storm, and have not contacted Jim Caputo, our Diocesan Property Manager, please do so.  He can help you with your dealings with your insurance company, so do not hesitate to call him.

As a result of this experience, we will be issuing guidelines for recommended minimum levels of insurance coverage.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Finance Department.
