Death in our diocesan family: Robert Hughes

Votive candles

With sadness we share the news of the death of Robert Hughes, the father of Bishop Hughes, this morning in Fort Worth at age 96.

Coach Hughes is legendary in Fort Worth and in basketball as the winningest boys high school basketball coach in the nation, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. This article from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram [PDF] describes his impact both on and off the court.

"I would not be the man I am had it not been for his influence," said one of his former players interviewed for the article. "He is everything. He meant so much to so many."

In addition to Bishop Hughes, he is also survived by his son Robert, Jr. and his daughter Robin.

His funeral will be held Saturday, June 29 in Fort Worth.

Condolences may be sent to Bishop Hughes care of Episcopal House, 31 Mulberry Street, Newark, NJ 07102.

Rest eternal grant to Robert, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding: Deal graciously with Bishop Hughes and her family in their grief. Surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
