Death in our diocesan family: The Rev. Hébert W. Bolles, father of the Rev. Anne Bolles-Beaven

The Rev. Hébert W. Bolles

With sadness we report the death of the Rev. Hébert W. Bolles, 88, father of the Rev. Anne Bolles-Beaven. He died peacefully at his Rhode Island home last week surrounded by his family.

Anne is Pastoral Associate at St. Andrew & Holy Communion in South Orange.

Hébert Bolles was a graduate of the General Theological Seminary, a military chaplain and a parish priest. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Bambi); children Paul, Anne, Elliott and Kate; and nine wonderful grandchildren.

In addition to serving several congregations in Rhode Island as well as Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, Hébert also had a long Navy career. Graduating from college in 1944 as a commissioned ensign in the Naval ROTC program, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Then in 1962, he returned to active duty as a Chaplain for the destroyer Squadron DESDIV 122, a highlight being the last "Good Will Cruise" circumnavigating Africa in 1963. He considered it to be, “the finest of what the military is about.” In 1966-1967 he served as Battalion Chaplain of the 2/26 Marines in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star with a combat “V.” He retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1979 with an abiding love of ships, African elephants and a sense that, “we’re all in this together.”

The memorial service is scheduled for April 20, 2013 at Trinity Church in Newport, RI at 10 a.m.

Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended. When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death we gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven. Lord, grant eternal rest, forever in the radiance of your light. Amen.
