Death in our diocesan family: Georgette Townes

With sadness we share with you the news of the passing of Georgette Winifred Walker Townes, 98, on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Georgette was the mother of Marsha Mackey, Secretary of the NEWARK ACTS Board, and mother-in-law of Howard Mackey, Vice President of the Diocesan Investment Trust.

Born in Newark on April 4, 1916, Georgette spent her childhood in Drakes Branch, VA until her family moved north, eventually settling in Mt. Vernon, NY. In 1947 she met and married Harold Townes, a police officer with the NYC Police Department. They lived in Mt. Vernon and later New Rochelle, NY, where they raised their only child, Marsha.

Georgette enjoyed gardening, creating a beautiful rock garden in the back yard of her New Rochelle home. She and her husband Harold also liked to travel, visiting many states throughout the United States including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, South America and several islands in the Caribbean.

Georgette was extremely proud of her family and never hesitated to convey that to anyone who would listen to her stories about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Georgette leaves behind a legacy of love as a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold; daughter, Marsha; son-in-law Howard, three grandchildren, Kristin, Nicholas and Jordan; and two great-grandchildren, Sean and Amaya.

A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in Valhalla, NY.

Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended.
When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death
we gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven.
Lord, grant eternal rest, forever in the radiance of your light.
Amen.
