It’s not the Cup of Salvation, but for certain golfers it comes close.
The Bishops’ Cup is the annual fundraiser and celebration of Cross Roads Camp and Retreat Center. From its beginnings 25 years ago as the first of its kind collaboration in the Episcopal Church and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to all that it offers to people of all ages today, there is much to celebrate about Cross Roads. – the “Camp” in Bishop Hughes’ description of the diocese as “91 congregations, a camp, and a convent.” The Bishops’ Cup is a fun and important way to help ensure that this ministry continues to be the place where so many people, especially our children, youth, and young adults, grow deeper into relationship with God and learn that church and lived faith can be fun.
The Bishops’ Cup came into being when three Lutherans: Anthony Briggs, Cross Roads’ Executive Director; Tom Kull, then Treasurer of the New Jersey Synod and a Cross Roads Board Member, and then Bishop Dr. Roy Riley, wondered how to develop an enjoyable and sustainable fundraiser. Two of the three are avid golfers, so an annual golf tournament fit the bill. And, given their desire to ensure that the fundraiser was a collaboration with the Episcopal side of the family, so to speak, they invited then Bishop Mark Beckwith to join the conversation. He enthusiastically agreed and the rest, as they say, is history.
Originally held at Beaver Brook Country Club in Clinton, the Bishops’ Cup moved to Copper Hill Country Club in Ringoes after three years, where it is still held each June. Many suspect divine intervention in the almost perfect weather experienced for the outing despite forecasts frequently to the contrary.
The Bishops’ Cup is awarded to the team with the lowest scramble score. Golf is enjoyed by all skill levels and there are many on-course contests including a hole-in-one worth $10,000 which has never been won. There also is a “lucky golfer” prize when all else fails!
The Bishops’ Cup Golf Outing and the Cup itself – thanks to the enthusiastic participation of all involved – are more than just a golf tournament and a trophy. They represent the spirit of collaboration and partnership that is one of the many gifts Cross Roads offers to the diocese and beyond. For more information about the golf outing, click here.
