While summer is often viewed as a season of rest for educators, it is also a time of preparation for those who serve in Christian formation. Across the Diocese of Newark, Sunday school teachers and leaders are using these months to reflect on the past year and prepare for the new program year ahead.

As part of the Children and Families Ministries’ quarterly gatherings, ten Christian educators met via Zoom on Thursday, August 14. Participants shared ideas and resources, explored innovative approaches to connecting with their congregations, and offered one another encouragement for the year to come. They also expressed hopes for the continued growth of Children and Families Ministries, particularly in supporting not only teachers but also parents and families across the diocese.

These quarterly gatherings are open to all Sunday school teachers and directors and serve as opportunities for fellowship, professional development, and mutual support in ministry.

Several new initiatives emerged from the August meeting. Planning is underway for a Fall Morning Retreat for Sunday school teachers and directors, designed to provide spiritual renewal while strengthening their commitment to Christian formation. In addition, a pilot support group for parents of middle school students is being developed. The program will combine a book discussion with time for fellowship, offering parents a space to share experiences and build community.

Children and Families Ministries looks forward to expanding these efforts and supporting parishes across the diocese in nurturing the faith of children and families.
