First Third of Life

On March 15, the Children and Families Committee of the First Third of Life Commission hosted a Children and Families Forum, gathering clergy, lay leaders, and volunteers who minister to children and families throughout our diocese. This morning of reflection, conversation, and connection provided a sacred space to share experiences, name challenges, and celebrate the joys of walking alongside the youngest members of our congregations.

This forum marked a crucial step in how the First Third of Life Commission seeks to serve our churches more intentionally. Participants had the opportunity to speak openly about the changing needs of their churches and the creative ways they have adapted to meet them. From Sunday School and intergenerational worship to family outreach and milestone moments, it became clear that while every parish is unique, we all share a common hope: to nurture the spiritual lives of children and support the families who guide them.

The insights shared are already shaping our planning for future initiatives, resource development, and connection opportunities.

Heading Into the Future

We are excited to announce our next diocesan gathering: a Zoom meeting for all Sunday School teachers and leaders, taking place on Thursday, August 14th at 7 pm. This virtual event will explore how to thoughtfully integrate both religious and secular holidays into the program year—from Advent and Lent to Thanksgiving, Earth Day, and beyond. We will also discuss practical ways to build stronger connections between Sunday School and the wider congregation, helping children feel truly seen and rooted in the full life of the Church.

Whether you are a long-time formation leader or newly stepping into this sacred work, you are warmly invited to join us. This will be a time to share ideas, ask questions, and support one another as we prepare for the year ahead. Plus, stay tuned for our next in person gathering of Children and Family leaders that will be centered around fellowship and creating a supportive community.

Together, as a diocesan community, we continue to listen, learn, and grow—trusting that when we invest in our children and families, we are tending the future of the Church itself.
