This year, the Union of Black Episcopalians, Diocese of Newark Chapter is excited to offer the A. Lorraine Jones Social Justice Scholarship in addition to the Marguerite E. Smith Scholarship.

In the tradition of our beloved past president, Marguerite E. Smith, we strive for excellence and believe in hard work. The Marguerite E. Smith UBE Scholarship is a competitive scholarship. All candidates selected for the scholarship, must possess the qualities demonstrated by Marguerite: love of God; working to the best of their ability; and the giving of oneself for the betterment of others.

The A. Lorraine Jones Social Justice Scholarship will be awarded to the individual who has demonstrated meaningful commitment to social justice grounded in our Baptismal Covenant—resisting injustice, loving their neighbor, and respecting the dignity of every human being.

Both scholarships are open to all high school seniors graduating in 2026 who are actively engaged in the life, work and ministry of a parish in the Diocese of Newark and are enrolled in an institution of higher education beginning in the Fall of 2026. Students are welcome to apply for both scholarships.

Application deadline: April 3 for fall 2026.
