Outdoor Stations of the Cross

You are welcome to join the community of St. Peter’s, Essex Fells in observing the Outdoor Stations of the Cross on our beautiful campus.

The Stations of the Cross have been a part of Christian devotion at Passiontide for centuries. Early Christian visitors to Jerusalem sought to follow literally the footsteps of Jesus, tracing the path from Pilate’s house to Calvary, pausing for prayer and devotion at various points. Various versions of this devotion feature as few as eight and as many as fifteen stations; eight of the stations recall scriptural accounts of Jesus’ passion and death. Following the Way of the Cross enables us to engage actively with the path of suffering walked by Jesus. Everyone is invited to join in walking the Way of the Cross at this outdoor service; worshippers may feel free to join as much of the procession as they are able, and to sit when they choose.
