In our turbulent times, can ethics, theology and philosophy still serve as guideposts to living a good life? In our first Guideposts series we will turn to the Socratic philosophers: Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, the Greek philosophers who laid a foundation for our pursuit of wisdom for answers.
Through an engagement with scripture, their writings and the writings of key theologians and philosophers, we will explore some fundamental themes in ethics such as “the good life,” happiness, virtues and practices, sin, justice, love, and “what it means to be human.” We will reflect on these themes as we seek to love God and neighbor in contemporary contexts and look to strengthen our moral, social, and political lives.
This guideposts series will delve into the philosophical foundation laid for us by the Greek philosophers that deeply informed Christian, Jewish, and Muslim theologians and our ethical understanding of the world. In a time when we seem to have lost our bearings, we will return to the cave to seek new light for the pursuit of truth. Through reading selections, dialogue together and sharing question we will find our way.
