Diocesan Juneteenth Celebration

Bishop Hughes invites you to join her for a diocesan celebration of Juneteenth.

A federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people there that they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln more than two years earlier.

Traditionally observed with community gatherings, music, food, education, and reflection on African American history and Civil Rights, our diocesan celebration will include a moderated group conversation featuring Mecca K. Madyun, Drew University’s Faculty Director of Civically Engaged Teaching, and an Evensong with Bishop Hughes preaching, followed by a reception.
