Immigration

Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral, in conjunction with Holy Trinity, West Orange, hosted a short vigil for the National TPS Alliance for Immigration on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

The Rev. George Dredden of Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral and the Rev. Dr. Miguel Hernandez led the service, along with leaders of the National TPS Alliance.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is available only to immigrants from specified countries where conditions are deemed dangerous or life-threatening due to ongoing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. While it entitles TPS holders to a work permit, protection from deportation, and authorization to travel abroad, it is not a pathway to citizenship, and it requires periodic renewal at the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security.

The purpose of the vigil was to encourage the Biden Administration to extend TPS before the next administration takes over. It is feared that if TPS is not extended during the current administration, then the likelihood of it being extended during the next administration is very low.

The event received media coverage by Telemundo 47 WNJU (watch video, in Spanish).
