On the fall morning of Saturday, October 25, thirteen Sunday school teachers and ministry leaders from across the Diocese of Newark gathered at Grace Church, Nutley, for a time of rest, reflection, and renewal. The retreat – Leaves, Laughter & Loving Your Ministry, hosted by the Children’s and Families Ministries Team of the First Third of life Commission – offered a cozy and spirit-filled pause for those who spend so much of their time nurturing the faith of others.

Over the course of three hours, participants shared stories, laughter, and moments of quiet reflection. From creative mindfulness activities like the “God’s Eye” craft to journaling and centering prayer, the morning encouraged everyone to slow down and reconnect with God’s presence in their ministry.

Between mugs of coffee and pumpkin bread, conversations flowed easily – reminders that connection and community are also forms of self-care. Through prayer, discussion, and even a few lighthearted games, the group discovered new ways to sustain their energy and joy throughout the church year.

One participant reflected, “It was exactly what I didn’t know I needed – time to just be and remember why I love teaching.”

As the morning closed with a circle of prayer and blessing, participants left feeling refreshed and supported, reminded that caring for others begins with caring for ourselves.

The group now looks forward to a year filled with continued connection and growth. In 2026, the Children and Family Ministry team will offer a workshop on One-Room Sunday School, an online Teachers’ Zoom Gathering, and a Spring Retreat to continue nurturing those who guide and inspire our youngest disciples.
