Alleluia Songs of Advent

A meditation  on Psalm 25

“Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been of old.” (verse 2)

“Do something, Lord, do something” I shout out loud to the television screen, when I see, as you do, endless scenes of women and children, caught up in the tragedies of our time.  As I hear my voice, I hear the exclamation come right back at me…”do something!” We are all called to be the ones who do something, no matter how little that doing something is.” To quote Mother Theresa, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

Imagine just how many lives the grant recipients of the Alleluia Funds have touched. The scores of children, women, the elderly, the frail, the undocumented, the hungry, the lost and dispossessed. Imagine how much the lives of those who minister to others supported by the Alleluia Fund have been transformed by their work, and those who read and hear of the wonderful, creative ministries that are inspired to apply for the grants.  The figures must be astronomical.  An ocean indeed.

That is where I place my trust; in the loving and compassionate response of souls who are moved to the bottom of their hearts to “do something”. That is where The Lord’s mercy does not put us to shame, for the work continues year after year after year.   That is where my heart fillips and sings Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! thank you Lord for your steadfast love, and for loving us enough to stay with us, inspiring yet another generation to get up and do something.
