Votive candles

With great sadness we share the news of the death Marguerite Smith, suddenly this morning, May 7, 2024, after a short hospitalization. She was the wife of the Rev. George Dredden, Priest-in-Charge at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral in Newark.

Marguerite served as President of the Newark Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians and on Diocesan Council, and was very active at her home parish, St. Peter's in Mountain Lakes, where she and George raised their daughters Alexis and Mikaela.

Condolences may be sent to Marguerite's family care of St. Peter's Church, 215 Boulevard, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046.

The viewing will be held Sunday, May 19, 2-6 PM at Rowe Funeral Home, 71 Washington Street, Morristown.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, May 21, 10 AM at Trinity and St. Philip's Cathedral, 608 Broad Street, Newark. A reception will follow across the street at the new Cathedral offices located at 589 Broad Street.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donation in Marguerite's memory be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Union of Black Episcopalians, Newark Chapter, or to the George and Ruth Dredden Scholarship Fund, the Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.

God, our Father, we thank you that you have made each of us in your own image, and given us gifts and talents with which to serve you. We thank you for Marguerite, the time we shared with her, the good we saw in her, the love we received from her. Now give us strength and courage, to leave her in your care, confident in your promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
