Death in our diocesan family: Butchild (Butch) Perez, father of the Rev. Gregory Perez

Butchild (Butch) Perez

With sadness we share the news of the death of Butchild (Butch) Perez, 85, father of the Rev. Gregory Perez, Rector of Trinity Church in Bayonne.

He died on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Heart Hospital in Austin, TX, surrounded by his children and one son-in-law.

Butch Perez was born on April 13, 1930 in Northrup, Texas, the son of Jesus and Jesusa (Ortega) Perez. He was united in marriage to Herminia Gonzales on May 14, 1950 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Giddings. Butch had worked as a meter reader for the City of Giddings for several years and retired as a pot room operator with Alcoa in Rockdale after 24 years. He was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Giddings and the Giddings Knights of Columbus. Butch enjoyed working in his yard, fishing and wood working. He was a man of many trades and even built his home himself from the ground up.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Herminia Perez of Giddings; three daughters, Virginia & Ramiro Cantu, Mary Frances Arriaga and Christine DeGerolami; two sons, Father Greg Perez & Doug Flores and Barry & Angie Perez; twelve grandchildren, Giovanni & Melissa DeGerolami, Yvonne & Jason Lieble, Stephanie & David Wurtz, Coco & Danny O'Donnell, Paula & Jared Hicks, Gabriel Cantu, Kat Sabino, Matt & Sara DeGerolami, Michelle DeGerolami, Alyson DeGerolami, Christian Perez and Alexis Perez; sixteen great grandchildren; two brothers, Ben & Helen Perez and Jesse & Linda Perez; one sister, Jean Escalante; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

His funeral will be held on Monday, March 21 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Giddings, TX.

Memorials may be made to the Heart Hospital of Austin, TX; the Alzheimer's Association; St. Margaret's Catholic Church CCD Building Fund; or the charity of one's choice.
