Diocese of Newark Youth Presence at General Convention
Our youth engaged with much of the business that was happening at The General Convention. There were hearings about resolutions and for information from a variety of committees and groups. Our youth made valuable contributions to a conversation with others on Race and Reconciliation and Caring for the Creation.
Summer Happenings around the Diocese
In the last days of July and August, many churches were hosting youth Bible Camp events. Here’s a sampling of a couple – send me photos and text about yours – so we can share ideas for next years’ planning.
Math and Science Camp at Holy Trinity, West Orange
Holy Trinity West Orange hosted a great summer workshop for a week. The kids arrived to a Bible story about the creative genius of God, and then enjoyed hands on science and Math activities. On my visit, I was treated to flying helicopter propellers, tried to help with robotics (not much help at all) and watched some cooperative teamwork. (See photos and a video below.)
Epiphany & Christ Church, Orange – “24/7 Jesus makes a way, every day” Vacation Bible Camp
I also had the opportunity to visit the annual Bible camp at Christ and Epiphany, West Orange on a different day. Over 50 youth attend each year. The day I attended the theme was Justice. Many older teens are assistants and camp counsellors – and there is an impressive team of volunteer engagement. Tie dye T shirts, original music, videos about leaders in civil rights and the work of Justice was the order of the day. (See photos below.)
If you have a camp running this summer – send us some pictures to email@example.com and we will highlight your ideas in our next edition. Sharing what we can with each other is inspiring and educational. Thanks for all your ministry!
Youth Leadership Group
The Pop-Up Youth Ministry plan is receiving some final tweaks pending presentation and review with Bishop-elect Carlye Hughes when she arrives. We will be holding an information session at Vestry University on October 5.
Confirmation Retreat Planning Group 2019
We have set tentative dates for next year’s Confirmation Retreats and for Confirmations: These dates will need to be confirmed by Bishop-elect Carlye Hughes, but hopefully it may help your planning to have them penciled in. Venues etc. are also yet to be decided.
There will be two one-day Confirmation Retreats (if demand exceeds capacity we will add another): Saturday, March 23, and Saturday, April 6.
Save the Dates!
Friday October 5, 6 & 7 – Youth Rally and Fall kick off will be held at Cross Roads Camp and Retreat Center. There is no charge for this event, and it will provide an AMAZING FUN way for youth to connect across churches and groups. A commitment to raising funds for Cross Roads is an essential part of the Retreat. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to register or for more information.
