Lenten Meditation for Thursday March 9, 2017

John 3:16-21

Jesus says that people love the darkness rather than the light because their deeds are evil (verse 19)

This passage reminds me of a cartoon in which the first three panels are in complete darkness, with the final one that is lit only by candle, and the words, it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

And yet, how many of us would want all of our deeds exposed to the light? We like to live in the darkness, most of the time. The light can be too bright; the light would expose us and would expose our shortcomings and our faults. We don’t want that. We don’t want other folks to see is so vulnerable.

Lent can be a time when we can confront those ‘evil deeds’ and turn to the light so that our deeds can be seen clearly and that they have been done in God.
