What will you do when the end comes?

For one score and seven years, I have been a priest. Daily, I hear, read, mark, (hopefully) learn, and inwardly digest the Holy Scriptures that our Blessed Lord caused to be written for our learning. All of that notwithstanding, I read today’s passage from Jeremiah and wonder, “Why didn’t those people get it? What more could God have done so that those people, His people, would see the error of their ways, repent, and return to Him?”

It is about now that I hear a voice asking me, “Those people; about whom is the prophet speaking? Do you have a mirror handy?”

An appalling and horrible thing

    has happened in the land:
 the prophets prophesy falsely,
    and the priests rule as the prophets direct;
my people love to have it so,
    but what will you do when the end comes?

What indeed?

The Readings
