Answer the Question! Meditation for Monday of Advent I

Advent 1

Have you stopped beating your wife yet? It’s a question that, if limited to ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers, most people would not care to have to answer. If you say ‘yes,’ you are acknowledging that you had, at one time, beat your wife, but you no longer do so. If you say ‘no,’ then you are admitting that the beatings are ongoing. You lose either way.

Some questions are not to be answered, which may mean they should not be asked. But others should be asked, and we should be required to answer, if only in the solitude of our hearts. “What do you think of Jesus?” is one such question, and we, like the chief priests, scribes, and elders, must think carefully about our answer, but unlike them, we must answer!

If Jesus is the Son of God, then why do you not follow him more clearly and more dearly? If he is not, why are you reading this now?

The readings for Monday of Advent I are Psalms 1, 2, 3, Isa. 1:10-20, 1 Thess. 1:1-10, and Luke 20:1-8.
