St. Mark’s Episcopal Church – Teaneck, New Jersey
Objective: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is seeking a creative and inspiring Organist and Music Director to provide musical leadership that encourages the gifts of our congregation and enhances our worship. The ideal candidate will foster a vital, attractive music program across a variety of musical styles (traditional, contemporary, jazz, gospel), develop a budding children’s music program, and manage the Music at St. Mark’s Concert Series.
Our sanctuary features a 3-manual Allen Digital Renaissance organ equipped with a Vista MIDI module and virtual acoustics, optimized for choir accompaniment and exceptional liturgical sound.
Key Responsibilities:
• Services & Rehearsals: Provide organ/keyboard music and lead hymns for the 10:00 AM Sunday service year-round. Conduct two adult choir rehearsals per month (September through June; the adult choir is off during July and August).
• Children’s Ministry: Formulate and lead rehearsals for a newly established children’s music program as it develops.
• Special Liturgies: Provide music for major holy days, including Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter.
• Administration & Instrument Care: Maintain the music library and choir records, coordinate hiring of guest musicians within budget, and oversee the regular upkeep of parish instruments.
• Concert Series: Organize, promote, and manage the logistics for the Music at St. Mark’s Concert Series.
Position Dimensions & Remuneration:
• Time Commitment: Part-time, averaging roughly 12–15 hours per week.
• Compensation: Competitive annual salary (TBD based on experience).
• Benefits: Position includes paid vacation time (consecutive weeks allowed during July/August) with substitute musicians covered at parish expense, as well as canonical FICA/Medicare and Church Pension Fund contributions for lay employees.
• Additional Income: The Director has first right of refusal for weddings and funerals held at the parish, compensated via standard service fees. Use of parish facilities for private teaching is also permitted.
Qualifications:
• Proficiency in organ and choral conducting.
• Strong collaborative skills, working under the direct supervision of the Rector and alongside volunteer musicians.
• Liturgical sensitivity with an openness to integrating diverse musical traditions into Episcopal worship.
