A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church, A Womanists Wading in the Word(TM) Production

The Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney, author, "A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church"
Thu, May 19 2022, 7:00pm to 9:00pm

The Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney, author of A Women's Lectionary for the Whole Church, will join us in person for a series of talks on her work developing this lectionary.

A "lectionary" is a structured schedule of readings. In the Episcopal Church the Sunday Lectionary reads through much of Scripture, Sunday by Sunday, over the course of a three-year cycle. Most of the Episcopal Church currently uses the Revised Common Lectionary (Episcopal Church version).

In response to concerns about how scripture is selected to be read, often omitting the women in the Bible or omitting stories that have particular value for women, Dr. Gafney has structured two different lectionaries under the title A Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church, striving to be intentionally inclusive of women in the Bible and stories that are particularly important to women. She has developed a one-year lectionary, Year W, as well as Year A of a three-year lectionary, following the Year A, B, C schedule that has been typical in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer or the Revised Common Lectionary. Volumes for Year B and C are forthcoming.

While this is a "Women's Lectionary" it is beneficial "for the Whole Church" because all people, regardless of gender, are enriched by an increased focus on these stories.
