Online Training for Licensed Worship Leaders

Book of Common Prayer
Mon, Sep 28 2020, 7:00pm

Sec. 4. A Worship Leader is a lay person who regularly leads public worship under the direction of the Member of the Clergy or other leader exercising oversight of the congregation or other community of faith. Title III, Canon 4

During pandemic, worship patterns and needs have had to adapt in different ways. Many lay members have been leading worship, whether in-person or online, some for the first time. It's important to remember that congregational worship must be according to the norms of the Episcopal Church and use the Book of Common Prayer or other authorized sources. There are two main options for services without an Episcopal priest: Morning (or Evening) Prayer and Ante-Communion (an adapted form of the first half of our Communion service, also called the Liturgy of the Word). Anyone regularly leading these services, if not ordained in the Episcopal Church, should seek licensing as a Worship Leader.

Please note that although all are welcome to participate in this course, your clergy person or warden must request licensure and the Bishop issues the license. Please speak to your clergy person or warden before signing up for the training.

This training course will cover the topics of proper use of the voice, basic liturgy, and the rubrics governing this ministry. Online attendance is required at all three Monday evening classes: Sept. 14, 21, and 28, at 7 PM.

Classes will be taught by Canon Andrew Wright Th.D., the Rev. Audrey Hasselbrook, Ms. Gail Barkley, member and former warden of Trinity & St. Phillip’s Cathedral; and Mr. Mark Trautman - Director of Music at St. Paul’s Church Englewood, founder and director of the St. Paul’s Choir School, and faculty of Rutgers University.

Minimum enrollment is 10 students.

See also the optional supplemental class, Music for Morning and Evening Prayer.

The registration deadline is Saturday, September 12.
