Juneteenth marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, the day the Union Army brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation to Texas, the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery.

The oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth has become a day for African Americans to celebrate not only their freedom, but their history, culture and achievements.

In 2021, President Biden signed into law Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, S. 475, creating a federal holiday to commemorate Juneteenth.
