Worship at Convention: Important instructions from the Liturgy Committee

The following instructions are from the diocesan Liturgy Committee regarding worship at the 142nd Annual Convention, January 29 and 30, 2016.

Church banners

Church banners will be displayed in the main ballroom. Churches are being asked to bring banners and stands, and to please have your stands clearly labeled with your church’s name and city. You will be instructed where to place your banner once seating assignments are finalized. We will NOT process with the banners. They will be set up ahead of time.

Friday Service of Holy Communion

MCs – The Rev. Canon Greg Jacobs, the Rev. Willie Smith, Trinity, Cliffside Park, the Rev. Audrey Hasselbrook, the Episcopal Church of St James, Upper Montclair

Service begins at 12:30 PM in the assigned ballroom.

Vesting – all clergy vest for the Eucharist only. The “Elements” Ballroom will be available for vesting. The room must be cleared of all vestments and personal belongings by 4:30 PM.

Altar-party clergy (Bishop’s chaplain, preacher, acolytes, and two deacons) – Clergy wear an alb and a white or festive stole. Laity wear an alb. Acolytes vest in the vestments they use in their home parishes. Rehearsal time is 11 AM. Any additional instructions about the service will be given to you at that time

Gospellers – will be seated (vested) at your assigned table. Rehearsal time is 11 AM.

All other clergy – wear a cassock, surplice and white or festive stole. A vesting room will be available to you. Signs will be posted to direct you. Please check to see where your church is seated before you line up for the procession. We won't process out.

Lectors/Ushers and any other worship ministers – attend the rehearsal at 11 AM in the ballroom

All Clergy:

  • Please tell your UTO rep the ingathering will take place at the conclusion of the Prayers of the People. Churches will line up behind the microphone. In turn, each representative will say the name of their parish.
  • Communion will be at stations. Gluten free wafers and grape juice will be available. Please let an usher know if someone your table needs communion brought to him/her.

The Offering is made payable to “Diocesan Council” to be divided between Newark ACTS and the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund.

Saturday – 8:30 AM Morning Worship with the Bishop’s address.

Presider – Gail Barkley, Trinity & St Philip's Cathedral

Vesting – Only the altar party will vest.
