Votive candles

With sadness we share the news of the death of Janet Mallon Bate, 98, peacefully after a long decline in her Essex Fells home on May 9. She was the mother-in-law of the Rev. Robert C. Morris and mother of Suzanne Morris. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Monday, May 27, 2019 at St. Peter’s, Essex Fells.

A member of St. Peter’s, Essex Fells since the late 1940s, Janet was born in Newark and grew up on the family farm in Washingtonville, NY. Upon graduation from Mount Holyoke College in 1942, she married Navy Lt. David Soule Bate. After the war and David’s graduation from law school, he joined a Montclair law practice and they moved to Essex Fells.

Janet was a homemaker and volunteer serving with several organizations, including the Essex Fells Garden Club and David Randolph’s Masterwork Chorus in NYC. As president of the West Essex Regional PTA, she was instrumental in rallying support for construction of the Middle School. She served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Historical Society for many years and helped to secure their present location on Park Place in Newark. She enjoyed music, particularly opera, dancing with her husband, tennis, playing bridge, genealogy, her friends and family.

Janet was predeceased by her husband of 70 years and a recurrent St. Peter’s Vestryman, David, and her daughter Nancy Bayne. She is survived by her children Suzanne Morris, Catherine Bull and David Bate, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
