General information about the Confirmation service for confirmands, sponsors, families & guests

Grace Church, Madison is located at 4 Madison Avenue, Madison, NJ 07940

St. Paul’s Church, Englewood is located at 113 Engle Street, Englewood, NJ 07631

There is no limit to the number of guests that a confirmand may invite. ("Confirmand" includes anyone being confirmed, received or reaffirmed.)

Confirmands need to be at the church 45 minutes prior to the start of the service as there will be a rehearsal to review the logistics of the service. Saturday services start promptly at 10 AM. Sunday services start promptly at 3 PM.

Confirmands (with clergy) will be seated in reserved pews by congregation. Sponsors, parents, family members and friends may sit in any non-reserved pews, usually on the sides.

The Bishop will ask each person being confirmed, received or reaffirmed the name (first or first and middle) to be spoken during the rite. Per the Bishop’s request, NAME CARDS ARE NO LONGER BEING USED. As each candidate approaches the Bishop and kneels, he/she will tell him his/her name and the rite to be pronounced. For example (“I am Catherine Marie and I wish to be confirmed” or “My name is Richard, and I wish to be received”). Family and friends stand in place in the pews as their confirmand is blessed.

PLEASE, do not use flash photography during the service. Non-flash photos may be taken. The Bishop will take a GROUP photo with the confirmands per church outside of the church, (weather permitting) immediately following the Confirmation service. Congregations will be asked to remain in their pews until Jane Jubilee directs them to where their photos will be taken. Families and friends should have their cameras ready as neither the Diocese nor the host church supply photographers. Time for photos is limited and does not allow for individual photos with the Bishop.

Anyone with limited mobility or in a wheelchair or cart who wishes to take Communion but cannot come to the front of the church to take it, should ask an usher to request Communion be brought to his/her seat.

The Confirmation service usually lasts between 1 ½ and 2 hours, depending upon the number of people being confirmed.

Neither the Diocese nor the host church provides a reception following the Confirmation service.

In the spirit of getting out into the neighborhoods of our diocese, Confirmation Services will be held in two locations in April 2018. Grace Madison and St. Paul’s Englewood have graciously opened their doors to host these life-affirming and life-altering services on the following schedule:
