Star-Ledger Guest Column by Bishop Beckwith, Rabbi Gewirtz and Imam Shareef: "Messages of hope and peace for Newark"

A Star-Ledger Guest Column by Bishop Beckwith, Rabbi Matthew D. Gewirtz of Temple B’Nai Jeshurun in Short Hills and Imam W. Deen Shareef of Masjid Waarith ud Deen in Irvington, who represent the executive team of the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace.

A message and thanks from Bishop Beckwith

By:
The Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith, Bishop of Newark

Near the end of my early Saturday morning bicycle ride, I had an accident. I was thrown from my bike; and the good news is that I landed exactly where I have the most padding. I was a bit dazed and bruised (I didn't think anything was broken), and I continued on to the Saturday morning Confirmation service at The Cathedral. What I didn't know until later was that I was extremely dehydrated, which required me to do much of the service sitting down -- and precluded me from celebrating Communion, greeting people and standing for pictures afterwards.

New Jersey: Our Common State for Ministry

By:
Carole Ann King
Bishop Mark Beckwith of Newark recognizes Bishop George Councell of New Jersey

In 1874, the third bishop of the state of New Jersey, William Henry Odenheimer, divided the state into two dioceses along the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.  During his episcopacy, the number of congregations had grown significantly, and it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to visit them all due to his failing health.  Odenheimer chose to remain in the newly-created Diocese of Northern New Jersey (later renamed the Diocese of Newark), which had 55 congregations, as opposed to the Diocese of New Jersey, with 72.

Bishop Beckwith's address at the 136th Annual Convention

The Rt. Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, Bishop of Newark

Go deeper, Jesus tells Peter in 5th chapter of Luke’s Gospel. Peter doesn’t want to go deeper. He thought he had already gone deep enough the previous night on the water and hadn’t brought back a thing. Not a minnow, not a mussel -- nothing. He figured he would hear some razzing from his colleagues and some complaining from his wife – but from Jesus? He is a carpenter now moonlighting as a rabbi; who may understand life, hope and freedom in a new and inspiring way – but doesn’t know squat about fish.

Churches pray for health reform, differ on details

By:
Jeff Diamant / Star-Ledger

From the pulpits and through public statements, religious leaders have been weighing in on various elements of what they say is a crucial moral issue. Catholic bishops in New Jersey, in letters to the state's members of Congress, have lobbied against possible inclusion of abortion coverage in any federal health care plan, a possibility Obama dismissed in his prime-time speech Wednesday. The Episcopal Church USA passed a resolution favoring a single-payer system, while some Catholic bishops in the Midwest have publicly opposed any massive government effort.

Message to the Diocese

By:
The Rt. Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, Bishop of Newark

As of the end of June, I will have visited each of our 110 congregations. It has been an extraordinary honor to be invited in to lead worship and a forum, talk to children and meet with the Vestry. I am eager to do run this cycle again, and I will, beginning in September.
