A home of one’s own, either rented or owned, is the cornerstone of independent living for any individual. For people with disabilities this dream – elusive for far too long – is closer to becoming a reality. We have come a long way from the idea that people living with disabilities could only be served and safe in institutions. In a 1999 landmark interpretation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Supreme Court decided that people with disabilities have a right to receive care in the most integrated setting.
In December 2018, the Alleluia Fund awarded grants totaling $186,000 to 36 ministries. Meet the 2018 Alleluia Fund grant recipients.
As part of the diocese’s work to select recipients for the Alleluia Fund, the diocesan Alleluia Fund Committee met for a full day of applicant interviews at Episcopal House this past Saturday.
Thanks to the generous support of congregations and individuals across our diocese, $177,805 in grants were approved by the Diocesan Council at their December 13, 2017 meeting With these funds our Alleluia Fund partners will assist many of the most vulnerable of God's people in our diocese.

In November, four-time Alleluia Fund grant recipient Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges sent a letter to John King, Director of Administration, explaining why they would not be applying for a grant this year. "Compared to where we were when we became a 501(c)3 organization 5 years ago, we are on much surer financial ground. We are grateful to all the Diocese has done for us and are happy that the Alleluia Fund will be able to support other needy organizations in our stead."

On this international day of giving, Giving Tuesday, I invite you to join me in supporting the Alleluia Fund for Outreach.
The Alleluia Fund transforms lives. Since it began eight years ago, it has provided over $1 million to programs that assist many of the most vulnerable of God’s people. Key areas of support are feeding the hungry, providing shelter, and assisting education programs. In 2016 alone, grants of $177,000 were made to programs throughout our diocese.
At their December 14, 2016 meeting, Diocesan Council approved the Alleluia Fund grant board’s recommendation to distribute $177,000 in grants to 33 organizations. This year’s grants bring the total funds distributed to our neighbors in need to over $1,000,000 since the fund’s origination in 2010.
More than 2,000 asylum seekers and immigrants are being detained in jails and correction centers in northern New Jersey. Many of them are alone and without support, knowing no one in this country, and able to communicate with their families back home only with great difficulty. St. George’s Church in Maplewood has begun partnering with the non-profit organization First Friends of NJ and NY, a 2015 Alleluia Fund grant recipient, to support these detainees through a variety of services.
