Mark 4.35-41

How terrifying it must have been to be in the boat with Jesus and the disciples when the storm suddenly came up – as it does so often on the Sea of Galilee. And how terrifying it must have been that Jesus, their Teacher, was asleep in the stern – oblivious to the tumult around him

So, the disciples awoke Jesus, with the complaint that he didn’t seem to care that they were dying. But Jesus wakes up and calmly looks around and reprimands the winds and the sea, and the wind ceases and the sea becomes calm.

1 Cor: 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple* of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body

  First, the Scriptures tell us about an unexpected gift, perhaps a pardon. Then we’re advised to select carefully the company we keep, to create hospitable conditions for spiritual growth. Also, we’re counseled to make sure that “the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things” don’t suffocate our souls.

Psalm 62:8-9

In God is my safety and my honor; *God is my strong rock and my refuge.

Put your trust in him always, O people, *pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.

Another High School shooting.  Seventeen more dead.  And the clamor for simple fixes has begun yet again.

11 You crown the year with your bounty,
    and your carts overflow with abundance.
12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;
    the hills are clothed with gladness.
13 The meadows are covered with flocks
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;
    they shout for joy and sing.

Psalm 139: 11 & 12

“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night, even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.”

Be a Good Neighbor: Agents of Change

This Gospel touches upon the theme of hospitality.  It reveals  how simple encounters can at times lead to connections where one as a believer can speak meaningfully to non-believers about how Jesus’ message of unconditional love can be applied.

1 Corinthians: 3:9

"For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building."

We are nurtured in our faith by God's scripture, His clergy,  and our worship, but it is through living in accordance with His commandments and teachings that we become God's chidren; His field, His building.

Grounded in God’s Love but Where are My Feet?

Is it me or has the week and weekend blurred so much it no longer reflects any connotation of “time off”.  Mark tells us Jesus clearly needs the time off.  He goes to a deserted place to pray after a full day of healing. He needs to be re-grounded in God.  Refreshed enough so he can do it again.  Good advice.  God’s promise is my comfort in my trouble. And that promise does not disappoint but gives me life. The psalmist was on to something.
